BUTLERS BOSTON: PRINTED BY LINCOLN & EDMANDS, ADVERTISEMENT. At the repeated and earnest solicita tions of the friends of Mrs. Torrey, the editor has undertaken to prepare these sheets for the press. And even this would not have induced him to publish them, did he not believe them calculated to promote the cause of piety. A firm persuasion also, that the writings from which these selections are taken, speak the simple language of the author's heart at the time they were written, and that they were written without the most distant idea of their publication, has rendered his task the more pleasing. As it is his wish to present the author as a sinner saved by grace, he has chosen to publish the work in its present form, that the reader's view of her character may be taken from her writings, rather than from any remarks of his own.
