In this issue of the Annual Report of the Virginia State Bar Association there are published brief sketches of William Fleming, Third President of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, as constituted in 1788, and of the two members of that Court who did not become its presiding officers, John Blair and Paul Carrington. These sketches appear in Appendix II.

The Association is indebted to Mr. David J. Mays, of Richmond, for the sketch of Judge William Fleming, to Mr. J. Elliott Drinard, of Richmond, for the sketch of Judge John Blair, and to Mr. Henry C. Riely, of Richmond, for the sketch of Judge Paul Carrington.

The volume is dedicated jointly to the three members of the first Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, as constituted in 1788 as a separate court, of whom sketches appear in this volume.

A picture of Judge William Fleming appears as the frontispiece in this volume and is a reproduction of the likeness of Judge Fleming which is published in "Bolling's Memoirs" and which is often inserted in Robertson's "Pocahontas and her Descendants."

The picture of Judge Blair is reproduced from a photograph of a portrait of the jurist presented on behalf of the Virginia State Bar Association to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, at a Special Session of the Court held at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, May 6th, 1913. The artist who painted this portrait is Leopold Seyffert, whose studio is at No. 10 S. Eighteenth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The portrait is a composition sketch of a number of representations, more or less idealized.

It is with regret that it has to be stated that there is no picture of Judge Carrington extant so far as is known. The Association is fortunate, however, in being able to publish a picture of the home of Judge Carrington, "Mulberry Hill," in Charlotte County, and also reproductions of his commission and of his letter of resignation.-Editor.
