HENRY ST. JOHN COALTER.

Henry St. John Coalter, son of St. George T. and Charlotte Drewry Coalter, was born in the County of Hanover, Virginia, November 19, 1869, and died at "Marengo," in New Kent County on the 26th day of March, 1911.

His academic training was at Pampatike Academy in King William county. After leaving the Academy, he engaged for a short time in business in the City of Birmingham, Alabama, but upon the re-establishment of the Law School at Richmond College, he entered the class of the first year, and two years later graduated with distinction. In the summer of the year 1892, when but twenty-three years of age, he began the practice of his profession in the City of Richmond, and continued in active practice until his death.

In the year 1899, Mr. Coalter was married to Miss Evelina Gregory, a daughter of Judge Roger Gregory, late professor of law at Richmond College, and he is survived by his widow and three children, Elizabeth F., Charlotte E. and Roger Gregory Coalter, and his mother, two sisters, Mrs. H. H. Vaden of Richmond, and Mrs. B. F. Spencer of St. Louis, Missouri, and one brother, Mr. R. T. Coalter of New Kent County.

He was a devoted and attentive son; a true and affectionate husband; a thoughtful and indulgent, but firm, father; a good and kindly neighbor; a true and loyal friend; and a just and upright citizen.

Those of us who knew H. St. John Coalter and had the privilege of his constant association can cheerfully testify that his friendship was of the most charming character. His serenity of temper was largely instrumental in cementing and holding his friendships. He was unselfish to an unusual degree; always
