Small 8vo. fine copy in green morocco, gilt edges
Dedicated to Sir Walter Raleigh by Basanier, who says that he had with the help
of "Monsieur Hakluit, homme certainement bien versé en l'histoire geographique
drawn the suppressed narrative of Laudonniere into light from the tomb in which it
had been lying for twenty years. In the same dedication he refers to Raleigh's
discovery of some islands and firm land between Florida and Cape Breton, named at
present (in honour of your most virtuous and illustrious Queen) Virginea, where the
Lord Greenvill has established your colony.

One of the preliminary pieces of Latin verse, by I. Auratus, contains these lines:
Et quæ Reginæ nunc læta sub Elisabetæ

Auspiciis, Waltere Ralegh, tibi terra reperta
Nomine Virginia est, Regina à Virgine dicta

Another which is by "Richardus Hakluit Anglus" has

Olim magnanimis concessit Florida Gallis,
VIRGINIA et sceptro nuper Elisa tuo.

This precedes by two years the date of Hariot's celebrated tract, and the Basanier above described is therefore THE FIRST PRINTED BOOK THAT CONTAINS THE NAME OF VIRGINIA. It is now extremely rare.

8 preliminary leaves; 123 numbered leaves, and 1 unnumbered; with signatures a and A-P in eights, Q in four leaves.

This tragical story of the Huguenot attempt to found a colony in Florida forms the second narrative of De Bry's Grand Voyages.

Hakluyt who helped to produce this French original, brought out an English translation of it the following year. That English translation is very rare: a copy of it was sold at the recent Ashburnham sale, and was bought (against my competition) by an American agent for £390.

"Ces annotations," says Brasseur, "faites par un homme parfaitement au courant des hommes et des choses de son pays, en font un exemplaire non seulement précieux mais unique." There are 14 portraits inserted. Guadalajara admired the knowledge of Beristain, but not his character; for he speaks of him as "el hombre mas servil que parió madre."

63 leaves, with numerous cosmographical diagrams and 18 full-page
maps; a beautiful copy in crimson morocco extra, gilt edges, by Joly 1555
A rare book which ought to find a place in as many American libraries as can
acquire it, since it contains American maps; in English libraries because it celebrates
the marriage of Mary and Philip, and in Spanish libraries because the epithalamium is
in that language.

The Sobolewski copy fetched about £17. Inferior copies have been priced by
Leclerc and Muller at about £8. 8s.

COLLATION: title and preliminaries, 4 leaves; followed by A-0 in fours and
P in three leaves. It is a scientific treatise on the globe, fantastically intermingled
with mythological pieces of French verse. The name Darinel by which the author
calls himself is taken from the Amadis romance, and he uses it on the title, and in
dedicating his work to the Queen of Hungary, sister of Charles V and Governor of the
Low Countries. But his real name appears in the colophon on the last page: fin de la
sphere des deux Mondes, composée en François par Darinel pasteur des Amadis, &
glosee par Gilles Boilleau de Buillon. Imprimée en Anvers; par Iehan Richard, an
Soliel d'or. l'an M.D.LV.

The maps include a heart-shaped Map of the World, and a map of the entire new
World so far as known, which bears for heading "Perv" and is stated to be by Bellero.
It is the same map which he used for his editions of Gomara and Cieza.
