THE FAREWELL.

Puella Ethrusca, quæ meam, &c.

Marullus, lib. iv. p. 52.

TUSCAN Lady! dare I name

The years my heart hath burnt for you? And I had hoped a mutual flame

Had warm'd your heart's affection too. But now you seek, or now have made Some cause some idle cause of quarrel, And for some new love's fickler shade

Desert your poet's bowering laurel.

Yes, for some titled child of wealth,
Whom Usury hath nursed to pride,
Who riots upon public stealth,

You quit your first true lover's side. 'Tis well-I'll bear it as I must

But witness it, ye Heavens sublime! And punish (if the Heavens be just)' Thy falsehood, cruelty, and crime.

Farewell, farewell, perfidious girl!
Dear as the apple of mine eye;
Thou wert indeed the precious pearl

I (hapless merchant!) sought to buy.
Go-and thy falsehood be thy dower-
Unworthy of a faith so true!

Henceforth no woman's charms have power My stubborn heart-strings to subdue.

Yet should some truer, fonder fair
Be mine in wedlock's sacred chains,
T'were vengeance sweet to see thee share
A slighted lover's slightest pains;

To hear my honest truth compared

With my base rival's hateful spellBut no-no-no-t -that pang be spared:

False girl of Tuscany, farewell!

LOVE'S HEROISM.

Acci, non ego tela, non ego enses, &c.

Marullus, lib. i. p. 8.

I FEAR not weapons, fear not swords,
Nor pestilence, nor fire;

I fear no threats of savage hordes,
Rain, sea, or whirlwind's ire;

I fear no ills that others hurt,
Nor value them this quill;
But, woe is me! yon silly flirt

Can slay me when she will.

LOVE'S ARITHMETIC.

Non tot Attica mella, littus algas, &c.

Marullus, lib. i. p. 14.

HYBLA hath not so many bees,
The shore so many weeds;
The hills have not so many trees,
The trees autumnal seeds;

The night hath not so many stars

To gild the silent skies,

The frost, so many glittering spars,
The spring so many dies;
