NOTICE.

The following list has been compiled primarily for the use of students in the National Art Library, who have also, it will be remembered, adjoining their reading rooms, the rich collections of the Museum of Ornamental Art available for study.

The title "Books on Ornament" is sufficiently exact for its purpose, and a classification in accordance with it, although not very precise, has been found practically useful in the working of the Art Library.

The scope of the present list will be understood from the appended table of contents: it is necessarily wide, and is no doubt capable of further extension; some works are included which illustrate the subject incidentally, some which touch upon small sections of it; to save repetition certain allied classes-for example, Celtic and Scandinavian -are brought together, see p. 32, also p. 34.

A classification, or rather a system of subdivision, has been attempted, with titles or headings arranged alphabetically; this, together with the index of subjects at the end of the list, may, it is hoped, afford students a clue to any special class, nationality, or period of Ornament, and thus aid in guiding them through the maze of a complicated study.

In a library devoted as this is to Art, and intended to assist the study, design, and practice of ornamental art in particular, the works that bear directly or indirectly on Ornament are necessarily very numerous. All those of the first category-directly bearing on the subject—are believed to be included in the list; of the others some have been mentioned; but, in general, references to other lists already published or the mention of the author's name alone has been deemed a sufficient guide. The classified lists already issued are: List of books on pottery and porcelain; furniture; lace and needlework; heraldry; costume; painting; sculpture. A new edition of that on pottery is in preparation; also a list of books on gold and silversmith's work, on architecture, and on bookornament, including borders, initial letters, &c. Thus sections or subjects which at a first glance may appear to be inadvertently omitted from this list will be found included in others already published or in those in preparation.

In order to carry out the subdivision above named, it has been occasionally necessary to repeat the titles of books that fall within more than one class; those entered under the division "General" will often embrace many classes, and should accordingly be referred to, even when not specified under the minor head.

The titles are in most cases abbreviated, enough being given to show clearly the scope of each work. It is, however, to be borne in mind that title pages, especially of books on the present subject, do not always indicate completely the range of objects illustrated in the author's pages; some attempt to supply such incompleteness in the titles of the works named has been made in the Index.

The classified portfolios and volumes of photographs forming part of the extensive collection (upwards of 50,000) included in the Art Library should be consulted by those requiring illustrations of special classes of Ornament: also a series of portfolios for the use of students is in preparation to contain prints, selected and arranged, of various ornamental objects.
