Et ne craint sergents ni recors;
Sommée en l'autre à comparaître;
Par conséquent, on ne craint pas
De l'endetter fort ici-bas.

Car le plus grand nombre, je pense,
Tiennent si juste la balance
Entre le monde, enfer et ciel,
Qu'ils pensent, sans péché mortel,
Commercer avec tous ensemble;
Et l'horreur égale leur semble,
De quitter le monde pour eux,
Ou pour le monde tous les deux ;
Et lorsqu'ils engagent leur ame,
La damnant par parjure infâme,
Ils ne sont que comme officiers,
Sur leurs paroles prisonniers.

Il est, dit-il, très-raisonnable
Qu'en tout on peut être comptable.
Mais quand rapport se peut avoir
Entre humain et divin pouvoir,

Between divine and human pow'rs,
That all that we determine here
Commands obedience every where,
When penalties may be commuted
For fines or ears, and executed;
It follows, nothing binds so fast
As souls in pawn and mortgage past:
For oaths are th' only tests and seals
Of right and wrong, and true and false;
And there's no other way to try

The doubts of law and justice by.

Quoth she, What is it you would swear? There's no believing till I hear; For, till they're understood, all tales (Like nonsense) are not true nor false.

Quoth he, When I resolv'd t' obey
What you commanded th' other day,
And to perform my exercise

(As schools are wont) for your
T'avoid all scruples in the case,
I went to do't upon the place :
But as the castle is enchanted

fair

eyes,

Et que ce qu'ici se décide,
Doive par-tout servir de guide;

J'allais bien faire mon devoir,
Comme se pratique à l'école;
Et, pour vous tenir ma parole,
Je jugeai que je ferais mieux
De me transporter sur les lieux;
Mais la place était enchantée

Par le Sidrophel, et hantée

By Sidrophel the witch, and haunted
With evil spirits, as you know,

Who took my Squire and me for two,
Before I'd hardly time to lay

My weapons by, and disarray,

I heard a formidable noise,
Loud as the stentrophonic voice,
That roar'd far off, Dispatch and strip,
I'm ready with th' infernal whip,
That shall divest thy ribs from skin,
To expiate thy ling'ring sin.

Th' hast broke perfidiously thy oath,
And not perform'd thy plighted troth;
But spar'd thy renegado back,

Where th' hadst so great a prize at stake;
Which now the fates have order'd me
For penance and revenge to flea,
Unless thou presently make haste:
Time is, time was: and there it ceas'd.
With which, though startled, I confess,
Yet th' horror of the thing was less
Than th' other dismal apprehension
Of interruption or prevention;
And therefore snatching up the rod,
I laid upon my back a load;

Par esprits de malin vouloir,

Comme vous devez le savoir;
