PREFACE.

No sooner shall the learned antiquarian have read the title-page of this pamphlet, than he will naturally ask, What are the Ludi Apollinares of Edinburgh? This question may be answered in three words-Goffing, Bowling, Swimming. But this answer, though explicit, will hardly be considered as satisfactory. It is not, however, thought proper to give at present any farther account of the rise and progress of the Conventus Gymnasticus Filiorum Æsculapii, than to assure the reader, that, notwithstanding its title, it is in no degree a Pagan, but entirely a social institution; and, while it promotes innocent mirth, it is at the same time intended to preserve good health, and good fellowship.

The exercises which the celebrators of the Ludi Apollinares have selected, may perhaps be thought singular. But, in this selection, they have in some degree been directed by a veneration for antiquity. For one of their number, noted for his researches in dusty libraries, either has found, or pretends to have found, a manuscript copy of the writings of Hippocrates, in which there is a most interesting treatise Пept Tay μy.
