CHAPTER I.
SECT. I. Alexander's birth. The temple of Ephefus is
burnt the fame day. The happy natural in-
chinations of that prince. Arillotle is ap
pointed his preceptor, who infpires him
with a furprising talte for learning. He

11. Alexander, after the death of Philip, afcends
the throne at twenty years of age. He fub-
jetts and reduces the nations contiguous to
Macedon who had revolted. He goes into
Greece to diffolve the alliance formed
againft him. He poffeffes himself of and
deftroys Thebes, and pardons the Athenians.
He gets himfelf nominated in the diet, or
affembly at Corinth, generaliffimo of the
Greeks against Perfia. He returns to Ma-
cedon, and makes preparations for carrying
his arms into Afia
III. Alexander fets out from Macedon upon his
expedition against the Perfians. He arrives
at flion, and pays great honour to the
tomb of Achilles. He fights the first battle
against the Perfians at the River Granicus,
and obtains a famous victory
IV. Alexander conquers the greatest part of Asia
Minor. He falls fick of a mortal distemper,
occafioned by bathing in the river Cydnus.
Philip the Phyfician cures him in a few
days. Alexander paffes the ftraits of Cili-

SECT. V. Alexander gains a famous victory over Darius
near the river Iffus. The confequences of
that victory
VI. Alexander marches victorious into Syria. The
treasures depofited in Damafcus are deli-
vered to him. Darius writes a letter to
Alexander in the moft haughty terms, which
he answers in the fame ftyle. The gates of
the city of Sidon are opened to him. Abdo-
lonymus is placed upon the throne against
his will. Alexander lays fiege to Tyre,
which at last, after having made a vigorous
defence, is taken by ftorm. The fulfilling of
the different prophecies relating to Tyre.. 66
VII. Darius writes a fecond letter to Alexander.
Journey of the latter to Jerufalem. The
honour he pays to Jaddus the high priest.
He is fhown thofe prophecies of Daniel
which relate to himself. The king grants
great privileges to the Jews, but refufes
them to the Samaritans. He befieges and
takes Gaza, enters Egypt, and fubdues that
country. He there lays the foundations of
Alexandria, then goes into Libya, where he
yifits the temple of Jupiter Ammon, and
caufes himself to be declared the fon of that
god. His return into Egypt
VIII. Alexander, after his return from Egypt, re-
folves to go in purfuit of Darius. At his
fetting out, he hears of the death of that
monarch's queen.
He caufes the feveral
honours to be paid her which were due to
her rank. He paffes the Euphrates and
Tigris, and comes up with Darius. The
famous battle of Arbela

SECT. IX. Alexander poffeffes himself of Arbela, Ba-
bylon, Sufa, Perfepolis; and finds immenfe
riches in thofe cities. In the heat of
drinking he fets fire to the palace of Per-
fepolis
X. Darius leaves Ecbatana. He is betrayed
and put in chains by Beffus governor of
Bactria. The latter, upon Alexander's
advancing towards him, flies, after having
covered Darius with wounds, who expires
a few moments before Alexander's arrival.
He fends his corpfe to Syfigambis
XI. Vices which firft caufed the declenfion, and
at laft the ruin of the Perfian empire
XII. Lacedæmonia revolts from the Macedonians,
with almost all Peloponnefus. Antipater
marches out upon this occafion, defeats
the enemy in a battle, in which Agis is
killed. Alexander marches against Beffus.
Thaleftris, Queen of the Amazons, comes
to vifit him from a far country. Alex-
ander, at his return from Parthia, aban-
dons himself to pleasures and excefs. He
continues his march towards Beffus. A
pretended confpiracy of Philotas against
the king. He and Parmenio his father
are put to death. Alexander fubdues
feveral nations. He at last arrives at
Bactriana, whither Beffus is brought to
him

XIII. Alexander, after taking a great many cities
in Bactriana, builds one near the river
laxarthes, which he calls by his own
name. The Scythians, alarmed at the
building of this city, as it would be a
check upon them, fend ambaffadors to the
king, who addrefs themselves to him with
uncommon freedom. After having dif
miffed them, he paffes the Iaxarthes,
gains a fignal victory over the Scythians,
and behaves with humanity towards the
vanquished. He checks and punishes the
infurrection

infurrection of the Sogdians, fends Beffus
to Ecbatana to be put to death, and takes
the city of Petra, which was thought
impregnable.....
SECT. XIV. The death of Clitus. Several expeditions
of Alexander. He commands worship

XV. Alexander fets out for India. A digreffion
with regard to that country. He be-
fieges and takes feveral cities which
peared impregnable, and is often in
danger of his life. He croffes the river
Indus, afterwards Hydafpes, and gains
a fignal victory over Porus, whom he
reftores to his throne
XVI. Alexander advances into India. A digref-
fion relating to the Brachmans. That
prince refolves to march as far as the
Ganges, which raifes a general difcon-
tent in his army. Remonftrances being
made to him on that account, he lays
afide his defign, and is contented with
going no further than the ocean.

Kubdues all things in his way thither,
and is exposed to great danger at the
fiege of the city of the Oxydr cæ; and
arriving at laft at the ocean, he after-
wards prepares for his return into Eu-
rope
XVII. Alexander, in his march through deferts,
is grievously diftreffed by famine. He
arrives at Palagardæ, where Cyrus's
monument ftood. Orfines, a powerful
lord, is put to death, by the clandeftine
intrigues of Bagoas the eunuch. Calanus
the Indian afcends a funeral pile, where
he puts himself to death. Alexander
marries Statira the daughter of Darius.
