impression can be expected beyond that which a falsehood, confidently asserted, generally produces at the moment. It has led to a strict investigation of the fact, and the result has not only exposed those shameless exaggerations, but has shewn that the total endowment of the Clergy is far from exceeding such a moderate provision as their numbers, and the station in society which they are expected to maintain, render fitting and necessary.

It must not, however, be supposed, that the enemies of religion will abandon their efforts to vilify and traduce our order. While many recover from their delusion, the spirit of those who deluded them will only be exasperated by disappointment; and their determination to speak evil of the ministers of religion, as persons who cannot be seduced or deterred from the performance of their duty, will probably continue. In this case, one retaliation only is allowed to them-by perseverance in the blameless discharge of their duties, they must shame the malignity of the accuser; always remembering, that they are the servants of Him, who when reviled, reviled not again. Forbearance in this respect may sometimes be difficult; because when his reputation is attacked, the Clergyman knows that the injury inflicted upon him is peculiarly severe, as tending to deprive him of that upon which his influence, and his power of doing good essentially depend. But in his patience and for

bearance under such provocations, he has the far higher satisfaction of proving himself a faithful disciple of his crucified Lord; he displays to the world the genuine spirit of his religion, and secures to himself a reward which the tongue of slander can never take away.

But to revert to the object of this day's solemn assemblage, we must consider, that no conduct will more effectually and securely tend to check and frustrate the designs of the enemies of Christ's Church, than a practical exercise of that benevolence prescribed to us as a duty by our religion; of which this blessed Charity affords a strong and unexceptionable instance. While we pray for them who persecute and slander us, and supplicate the Almighty to turn their hearts, let us not forget that our light must so shine before men, that they may see our good works: the enemies of our faith will thereby be more and more deprived of grounds for attack upon the Christian profession, and we will hope that they themselves may become sensible of the blessings of the Christian dispensation of mercy, and finally be of the number of those, who glorify our Father which is in heaven.
