[This work consists of the Middle Treatise of three translated from Cicero, printed by Caxton as one book in 1481. It is the treatise on "Friendship" complete, and was preceded by the "De Senectute," and followed by the "Declamation of Noblesse." It contains 28 leaves, signatures - 4 in 8's. In fine condition, except some scribblings in the plain margins; and four words beginning the first page, "Here foloweth the said," were erased by an ornament. Measured 10% by 734 inches. It is worthy of note that the portion containing the "Declamation," which should follow this, and which contains the "Explicit per Caxton," was in the Ashburnham Library, at the sale of which it realised £102. [See Blades ii., 90, who did not know of this portion.]-Catalogue.]

Nov., small 4to. (707) Leighton, £18 10s.

[A rare specimen of Julian Notary's press. The only copy known to Ames is in the Public Library at Cambridge, which Lowndes quotes, but gives the number of leaves as 385 instead of 285, including title and two leaves of index, the leaves being folioed to cclxxxv. The last copy sold by auction was that of J. B. Inglis in 1900.-Catalogue. That copy realised £50. See BOOK-PRICES CURRENT, Vol. xiv., No. 6099.-ED.]

[This copy measured 13% inches by 8% inches, and some of the lower margins had rough edges. It had also the variation "coppies" for "copies" on the title, no more than about three examples with that variant being known. The book was clean and sound so far as it went, but the whole of "A Winter's Tale" (pages 277-303) was missing. The leaf with the verses had recently been rebacked and the top corner of the title-page mended. The title-page and the leaf, “Upon the Effigies," were on thicker paper than the rest of the work.—ED.]
