we are pleafed to fee that he has preferved his temper. Lord Bacon, who had been unluckily quoted by Mr. E, is fhewn to have been a “thorough Calvinift" in fentiment,

SINGLE SERMONS.

Civil Magifiracy Defended; and the comparative consequences of Sins againfi God and against Society confidered; in a Sermon, occafioned by the execution of G. Ruffel, who fuffered for croft-breaking, near Manchefer, Sept. 15, 1798. By W. ROBY. 8vo. 24 pages, 6d. Manchefter, Harrop; London, Chapman,

THIS Difcourfe, was intended to improve the death of a penitent criminal; was preached at his own request, and is well adapted for the in. #truction of others. In this view, we particularly recommend it to thofe who have access to perions in this unhappy fituation,

The Dependance of the whole Law and the Prophets on the two primary Commandments; a Sermon, preached before the Wefters Baptift Affeciation, at Salisbury, May 31, 1798, and published at their request. By J. KYLAND, D. D. 8vo. 42 pages, 6d. Bristol: Cottle, &c. London: Button.

MANY of our Readers will anticipate that this Difcourfe, is founded on those remarkable words of our Lord, Matt. xxii, 40, from which it was the Author's object to fhew the dependance of Revelation on the two great precepts-the love of God and Man; and to employ this connection and dependance, in fome fort, as a criterion of facred truth. Thefe to pics, Dr. R. difcuffes with his ufual judgment and ability, and improves them by feveral practical reflections.

Self-Righteoufnefs renounced: The Subfiance of a Sermon on Job xlii. 5, 6, occafioned by the death of Mr. Eedes, of High Wycombe. By the Rev. W. B. WILLIAMS, Curate of High Wycombe, &c. 8v9. 24 pages, 6.1. London: Chapman, Grithths and Matthews.

THOUGH this "plain Difcourfe," as the Author modeftly terms it, was not compofed for Publication, three very good reafons are given for its appearance: 1. The profits are devoted to the fatherlefs and widow.2. It records a striking inftance of fovereign and converting grace;-and 3d, it is hoped, that it may by the Divine Blefiing be made ufeful to others. On thefe accounts, we hope many of our Readers will be purchafers, and we may venture to affure them that whilft they fow they will alfo reap, the Discourse itself being inftructive and Evangelical. Mr. E. it feems was the fubject of much affliction, which he bore with refignation; but it was not till his laft fatal illness, that he learned to renounce his own wn righteoufnefs, and truit in Jefus Chrift alone.

POETRY,

THE MISSIONARIES VOYAGE. SEE the love of Christ constraining

Briton's fons to leave their land; Eafe, and health, and wealth difdaining, At their gracious Lord's command. Mighty billows round them playing, As they fwiftly fail along; Hear them finging, reading, praying, Chrift the theme of ev'ry fong. Hark! methinks I hear them, crying; "Gracious Pilot! faithful Friend! "We, with thy command complying, "For fuccefs on thee depend. "Guide us fafely o'er the ocean,

"Blefs with converts on the shore; "Then be life, or death our portion, "We will praife thee evermore.

FAMILY PIETY.

OFOR an undiffembled faith,

JUNIOR.

A faith which works within; Which faves from everlasting death, And conquers ev'ry fin! Happy the household where it reigns, And where it long has dwelt; Whose ancient and whose later fons Its fov'reign pow'r have felt. How pleafing to look up and fee The fathers now with God, While their furviving family Prefs to the fame abode.

O glorious hour when death fhall come,
Their spirits to unite;

And heav'n be their eternal home,
And God their chief delight!

In vain apoitate children hope
With pious friends to dwell;

Sin fep'rates branches from the stock,
As far as heaven from hell.

AWAKE my voice in rapturous lays,

[ocr errors]

In airs melodious chaunt the praise,

Of Chrift the finners' Friend;

Whofe love to finful dying man
Exifted long ere time began,

And ne'er fhall know an end.
Come fellow pilgrims, join the fong;
And as you pafs the road along.

Your hearts and voices lend; High as the vaulted heav'n arife, And join th' angelic melodies,

To praise our common friend. What tho' our ever watchful foe, Bent on our ruin, fhame and woc, Mav. ftrive our fouls to rend From Christ our Lord; 'twill fruitless prove He, the dear object of our love,

Will love us to the end.

Strong in his ftrength we'll perfevere,
Nor all the powers of darkness fear,

Till we to heav'n afcend;

Then fing whilst we furround the throne, That "Jefus having loved his own, Doth love them to the end.”

SIN DECEITFUL.

SPARKLING liquor! how thou fmil'ft,

Tho' thou mischief doft intend!

Thou with pleasure first beguilft,
But thou doft in ficknefs end.

Surely the forbidden tree

Was no other than the vine; Since temptations are like thee, And their fins refemble thine, VOL. VI.

SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN.

THE foul untaught is dark as night,
Where ev'ry evil dwells;
All-hail Instruction's facred light,
Which all this might expells.
Once rude and ignorant we were,

With natures prone to stray !
Bleft now by Pity's kindest care,
We hear of Wisdom's way.

Our

Our fabbaths once in vain we spent,

Neglected and unbleft;

But now the houfe of pray'r frequent,
To keep the facted reft.
Jefus invites young children near,

Oh, may we ftraight obey'
Give us, O Lord, th' attentive ear,
And teach our hearts to pray.
Jefus was once, like us, a child,

And children ftill he loves;
Like Him may we be meek and mild,

And all that he approves.

Our parents, friends, and teachers, blefs, And all their care repay;

Bless them, O Lord, with thy rich grace, And teach the world thy way.
