GOD.

The chain of being is complete in me;
In me is matter's last gradation lost,
And the next step is spirit-deity!

I can command the lightning, and am dust!
A monarch and a slave; a worm, a god!

Whence came I here, and how? so marvellously
Constructed and conceived? unknown! this clod
Lives surely through some higher energy;
For from itself alone it could not be !

Creator, yes! Thy wisdom and thy word
Created me! Thou source of life and good!
Thou spirit of my spirit, and my Lord!

Thy light, thy love, in their bright plenitude
Filled me with an immortal soul, to spring
Over the abyss of death, and bade it wear
The garments of eternal day, and wing

Its heavenly flight beyond this little sphere,
Even to its source-to thee-its author there.

O thoughts ineffable!

O visions blest!

Though worthless our conceptions all of thee,
Yet shall thy shadowed image fill our breast,
And waft its homage to thy Deity.

God! thus alone my lowly thoughts can soar;

Thus seek thy presence-Being wise and good!

Midst thy vast works admire, obey, adore;
And when the tongue is eloquent no more,
The soul shall speak in tears of gratitude.

INDEX.

A chieftain to the Highlands bound.

A.

A cloud lay cradled near the setting sun

Affliction one day, as she harked to the roar..

Again, how can she but immortal be?
Ah! don't be sorrowful, darling

A little river with its rock-laid banks

All thoughts, all passions, all desires

Among the beautiful pictures....

"And I could weep," the Oneida Chief..

And thou art dead, as young and fair.

And thou hast walked about (how strange a story)!

And whence, then, came these goodly stones 'twas Israel's pride to raise ! 395

[blocks in formation]

As down in the sunless retreats of the ocean..

As o'er the cold sepulchral stone.....

[blocks in formation]

At the close of the day, when the hamlet is still.

[blocks in formation]

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning!

Bright flag at yonder tapering mast!......

Bright shadows of true rest! some shoots of blisse.
But who shall see the glorious day

Careless seems the great avenger; history's pages but record
Cold in the earth, and the deep snow piled above thee..
Come, dear old comrade, you and I.
Come from my First-ay, come.......

Come hither, thou beautiful rover...

123

Come in the evening, or come in the morning

131

Come into the garden, Maud...

128

Come, take our boy, and we will go..

196

Come to me, dearest, I'm lonely without thee

132

Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 'tis early morn..

155

Could ye come back to me, Douglas, Douglas ...

"Courage," he cried, and pointed toward the land..
Cyriack, this three years' day, these eyes, though clear

Dead! one of them shot by the sea in the East.
Dear Lilian, all I wished is won.......

Give, as the morning that flows out of heaven
Give me my scallop-shell of quiet.

"Give us a song !" the soldiers cried

Γνώθι σεαυτόν ! And is this the prince

God of the thunder! from whose cloudy seat
Go, forget me! why should sorrow..
Going, the great round sun

Go, leave me, priest; my soul would be..
Go, lovely rose....

Hast thou a charm to stay the morning star..

Hear the sledges with the bells...

He came a beauteous vision !
He is gone on the mountain..
Here once my step was quickened
Here's the garden she walked across
Her hands are cold, her face is white.
He who hath bent him o'er the dead
High hopes that burn like stars sublime
Hope of those that have none other..

How many now are dead to me

How seldom, friend, a good great man inherits
How shall I know thee in the sphere which keeps....
How sleep the brave who sink to rest.......

I.

I am far from my hame, an' I'm weary often whiles
I arise from dreams of thee

122

I asked the heavens: What foe to God hath done

363

I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers.

I cannot find thee! Still on restless pinion

I cannot make him dead

I do not ask, O Lord, that life may be

I do not own an inch of land...

If I had thought thou couldst have died

I fill this cup to one made up......
If in the silence of this lonely eve..

If thou wert by my side, my love..

I gazed down life's dim labyrinth

I have ships that went to sea...

I know not whence it rises.

[blocks in formation]

I know thou hast gone to the house of thy rest

455

I lay me down to sleep....

437

I leaned out of the window, I smelt the white clover.

124

I love (and have some cause to love) the earth

[blocks in formation]

In that home was joy and sorrow where an infant first drew breath....

287

In the greenest of our valleys

263

In the silent midnight watches...

376

In the valley of the Pegnitz, where across broad meadow lands.
