Ye hae my heart, ye needna fear,
Sae we maun wait anither year,
To live and toil, and scrape up gear;
I canna, mauna marry yet.

'Twas but yestreen my mither said,

66

"O dautie, dinna marry yet;

I'll sune be in my last cauld bed

Ye're a' my comfort, tarry yet." Whene'er I slip out o' her sicht,

She sobs and sighs, and nocht gangs richt; Whisht! 'tis her feeble voice-gude nicht; I daurna, mauna marry yet.

Still! hör'st die Stimme?-gute Nacht--
Heirathen darf und kann ich nicht.

Christmas Hymn.

HEBER.

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
Lighten our darkness, and lend us thine aid;
Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining,
Low lies his bed with the beast of the stall;

Angels adore him in slumber reclining,

Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all.

Say, shall we yield him in costly devotion,
Odours of Edom and offerings divine,
Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine?

Vainly we offer each ample oblation,

Vainly with gold would his favour secure,

Richer by far is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

Hellster und bester der Orients-Söhne,
Leiste uns Hülfe, im Dunkel sei Licht;

Gnade vergebens durch Gold man erfleht;
Reicher viel reicher des Herzens Verehrung,
Theurer dem Herrn ist der Armen Gebet.

E. A. PO E.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten loreWhile I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door; ""Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door

Only this, and nothing more."

Ah! distinctly I remember, it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow
From my
books surcease of sorrow-sorrow for the lost Lenore-
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me-filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating, ""Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door: This it is, and nothing more."
