IS THE SOUL IMMATERIAL AND IMMORTAL? THIS is a useful though not an essential preliminary investigation. We therefore attempt to throw a little light on it. Christianity is the religion of inquiry, as well as the subject of triumphant proof. It does not demand our assent to propositions without any previous examination of their character and their claims. Its language is-Search, examine. judge ye whether these things be so or not. Qur first is simply a preliminary inquiry—it is the immortality, or after-existence, of the soul of man. If there be no hereafter-no reckoning at the judgment morn-no destiny in the future dependent upon character created in the presentthen the claims of the Gospel to be a revelation from God are of comparatively trivial moment. If, when we die, and the green turf is laid upon us, our eyes are destined to open on no hereafter, nor our hearts to throb again, then the truth or the falsity of Christianity, except so far as it touches this, is an insignificant inquiry.
