THE

PREFACE

Earing that Dr. Whitby's

discourse on the frue points, was reprinting, which: is judged a master piece on the

subject, in the English tongue, I determined to give it a jreb reading ; and having observed that the performance is accounted an unanswerable one, and that the general cry on that fide of the question is, Why don't ye answer Dr. Whitby? I found my self inclined to an attempt of this nature, believing it would be a proper and seasonable time to engage in fucba work.

The method in which I propose to consider what this learned writer bas advanced on this subject, is, First, to examine the several passages of scripture mbich he chiefly makes use of for the confirmation of his own scheme, and as militating against these doctrines which are commonly called Calvinistical; and endeavour to answer bis arguments and objections from them, and set tbcfe paffages in a juft and proper light; which composes tbuis first part I nom publish. I once thought to have reduced the several scrip· taros mder the distinct beads in contro

Ziešity : but observing that one and the fame fcripture is often made use of for different purposes, 1 found 1 stould be obliged to consider fome of them over and over again ; and therefore determined ta let them stand in the order in mbich they are irr the Bible, and which I observed in preacbing from them; for it should be known, that what is bere publisb’d, are extracts from fermons on these texts, de
