Hymenoptera of America North of
Mexico-Synoptic Catalog

(Agriculture Monograph No. 2)

SECOND SUPPLEMENT

INTRODUCTION

The "Hymenoptera of America North of Mexico-Synoptic Catalog" was published on July 11, 1951. It contained references to the literature published through 1949, and to a few papers that appeared during 1950. The First Supplement to this catalog was published on October 8, 1958. It covered the literature that appeared from 1950-1951 through 1956. The Second Supplement, which is presented herewith, includes the literature published from 1957 through 1963, and in some sections, most of the papers that appeared during 1964.

In general, this Second Supplement to the "Hymenoptera of America North of Mexico-Synoptic Catalog" preserves the form of the First Supplement. New supergeneric, generic, subgeneric, and trivial names are starred. Abbreviations and symbols agree with those used in the Catalog and First Supplement.

Additions to distribution, hosts, or prey, or corrections to entries in the Catalog or First Supplement are made following the citation to the generic, subgeneric, or trivial name as it appears in the Catalog or First Supplement. Additional references to papers on biology, distribution, or taxonomy are made in the same way. In the center headings the first page reference is to the Catalog, followed by a reference to the First Supplement, if the latter is necessary.

Generic transfers are shown as follows:

Genus CEPHALCIA Panzer, pp. 9-10, Sup. 1, p. 8

apicalis (Westwood). Transf. to Acantholyda subg. Acantholyda A. Costa. ACANTHOLYDA subgenus ACANTHOLYDA A. Costa (=Acantholyda A. Costa of Catalog, in part, pp. 7–9)

apicalis (Westwood). Transf. from Cephalcia Panzer, p. 9 (teste Middlekauff, 1958, loc. cit. supra, p. 77).

When a species is transferred to a genus or subgenus different from the one in which it appears in the Catalog or First Supplement, all synonyms and other information under it are also transferred, unless indicated otherwise.

New synonymy is shown:

modesta MacGillivray. Syn. of pini Rohwer.

pini Rohwer.

Acantholyda modesta MacGillivray, 1923 (syn. by Middlekauff, 1958, loc. cit. supra, p. 85).

New status is shown as:

johnsoni johnsoni Viereck, changed status. Reduced to subsp. rank (teste Schuster, 1958, loc. cit. supra, p. 46).

Generic or subgeneric transfer and a change in status may be combined:

SPHAEROPTHALMA subgenus PHOTOPSIS Blake
(=Photopsis Blake of Catalog, in part, pp. 753-756)

amphion (Fox). Transf. to Sphaeropthalma subg. Photopsioides Schuster. *SPHAEROPTHALMA subgenus PHOTOPSIOIDES Schuster

amphion amphion (Fox), changed status. Transf. from Photopsis Blake, p. 753 and reduced to subsp. rank (teste Schuster, 1958, loc. cit. supra, p. 38).

In the Aculeata, subgeneric assignment may be indicated by a citation to the subgeneric name in parentheses following the species entry:

[merged small][ocr errors][ocr errors][merged small]

In many entries here, the compiler of a particular section has not agreed with the taxonomic placement or nomenclature used in a publication by some other worker. This divergence of opinion is expressed by citing the publication under the placement or usage here considered to be preferable, followed by an indication of the different placement or nomenclature in parentheses. For example:

Genus EUPELMELLA Masi, p. 512

Nomenclature: Peck, 1963, loc. cit. supra, p. 492 (Macroneura).

In this Second Supplement the citations to the authorities for some changes, additions, or deletions have been shortened in order to save space. The references for new genera, subgenera, species, subspecies, and varieties are cited in full throughout, but frequently cited works may be referred to only by author, year, and page following the first reference. For instance, in the Ichneumonidae, Townes and Townes, 1960. U. S. Natl. Mus. Bul. 216 (Pt. 2) i-iv +1-676 is, after its first citation, referred to as Townes and Townes, 1960, followed by particular page references. This has been done when this work is the authority for generic transfers, deletions, changes in status, or synonymy. References to discussions of biology, distribution, or taxonomy from this work are cited in the same way.

Elsewhere in this supplement frequently cited works may be cited as loc. cit. supra, where such usage will save space without producing ambiguity of reference. For instance, in the Symphyta, Middlekauff, 1958. Calif. Univ. Pubs., Ent. 14: 51-174 is cited completely under the Family PAMPHILIIDAE. Subsequently it is referred to as Middlekauff, 1958, loc. cit. supra, with the page reference, where it is the source for generic transfers, changes in status, deletions, synonymy, or discussions of biology, distribu

tion, or taxonomy.

In this supplement, some changes, deletions, or additions are made on the authority of the individual who prepared a particular section. These entries include no citation to the literature or to personal communications from some other worker. For instance, in the Symphyta, Genus SIREX Linnaeus, p. 83 of the catalog, the information that areolatus (Cresson) is "Adventive in Eastern States, emerging from lumber" is teste B. D. Burks, although this last phrase does not appear in the text.
