I CONFESS that I feel no very strong inclination to write any Introduction to this concluding volume, but the circumstances under which the work was commenced, are so exceedingly different from those which characterize its completion, that there seems to exist a sort of necessity of saying some thing on the subject. When I began to print the first volume, I had no determinate idea either of the extent of what I meditated, or of the particular subjects which my undertaking was to comprehend.
