NOTICES BY THE PRESS.

MECHANICS' MAGAZINE.

'The want of a complete set of Earthwork Tables has long been felt. From the over-condensed character of Mr. Bidder's Tables, they are, to a certain extent, useless. But the fault of Mr. Bidder's Tables is absent from Sir John MacNeill's, yet here the other extreme is met with, and from their unwieldy expansion Sir John's Tables are somewhat unsatisfactory. Now, to hit the happy medium between these two extremes is to meet all views, and we think this has been effected in a highly satisfactory manner by Mr. DAVID CUNNINGHAM in his 'Earthwork Tables.' He felt the want of a set of Tables possessing compactness without too great compression of matter, and completeness without unwieldy expansion. Setting himself to work, he has succeeded in producing this desideratum, and a most creditable production it is. The Tables start with a base 6 feet wide. . . . A Table is also appended which the Author has designed for a rough and ready method of measuring earthwork by means of transparent paper or horn. This will prove very useful to resident engineers and contractors in the cursory measurement of works. Various other Tables are added-those for gradients and resistances on roads amongst others. The whole

appears to have been carefully checked, and the volume is one which may safely be left to work its own way amongst those for whose assistance it has been prepared.'

RAILWAY NEWS.

'A complete set of Earthwork Tables has been hitherto wanted among engineering works. This desideratum has just been supplied by Mr. CUNNINGHAM. . . . Of all the Tables extant, those of Mr. Bidder and Sir John MacNeill are deservedly most in favour with their fellowengineers. But each of these has a fault. That of the former is that it is too condensed, and that of the latter engineer arises from its unwieldy expansion. The happy medium has, we believe, been obtained in the present work. . . . Ample instructions are given for the use of every part of the book, which is certainly a most compact and useful work.'

PRACTICAL MECHANICS' JOURNAL.

There are two great Earthwork Tables hitherto in use among British engineers-those of Mr. Bidder and Sir John MacNeill. There is no doubt but that a set of Tables workable with facility was a professional want, which has thus been supplied. . . . The work commences, as all such should, by developing the formule upon which the Tables are constructed, and in showing certain contrivances for rapidly and approximately ascertaining and checking quantities, &c.'

ARTISAN.

'A complete set of Earthwork Tables, supplying all that is required in the way of data, and being at the same time sufficiently condensed to be handy for reference, has long been a desideratum, for until the publication of this work we have seen none possessing those combined qualifications.'

ENGLISH MECHANIC.

Respecting the treatment of the subject by Mr. CUNNINGHAM we have nothing to say but what is commendatory.'

ANCIENT HISTORICAL EPOCHS.

Now in course of publication, uniform with EPOCHS of MODERN HISTORY, each volume complete in itself,

EPOCHS OF ANCIENT HISTORY:

A Series of Books Narrating the History of Greece and Rome and of their Relations to other Countries at Successive Epochs.

Edited by the Rev. GEORGE W. COX, M.A. late Scholar of Trin. Coll. Oxford; and jointly by CHARLES SANKEY, M.A. late Scholar of Queen's Coll. Oxford.

'The special purpose for which these manuals are intended, they will we should think, admirably serve. Their

clearness as narratives will make them acceptable to the schoolboy as well as to the teacher; and their critical acumen will commend them to the use of the more advanced student who is not only getting up, but trying to understand and appreciate, his HERODOTUS and THUCYDIDES. As for the general plan of the series of which they form part, we must confess, without wishing to draw comparisons for which we should be sorry to

have to examine all the materials, that
it strikes us as decidedly sensible. For
the beginner, at all events, the most in-
structive, as it is the easiest and most
natural, way of studying history is to
study it by periods; and with regard to
earlier Greek and Roman history at all
events, there is no serious obstacle in the
way of his being enabled to do so, since
here period and what has come to be
quasi-technically called subject fre-
quently coincide, and form what may
fairly be called an Epoch of Ancient
History.'
