The consequences of this Augsburg Interim were most deplorable to Germany, as those who opposed it were compelled, by the power and arms of the Emperor, to submit; and had he known how to take advantage of it, the Lutherans might have been altogether annihilated as a party.

When the citizens of Augsburg at the Reformation changed their religion, the ecclesiastical bodies for the most part quitted the place. The Senate, in an Address to the Emperor, showed that they had given no cause for such a step, to which the Bishop and his clergy replied. The above are the very documents published at the time.
