set the captive free; To take a-way transgression, And rule in equity.

9:

126

The glory of Ilis kingdom.

2 He comes, with succour speedy To those who suffer wrong; To help the poor and needy,

And bid the weak be strong;
To give them songs for sighing,—
Their darkness turn to light,-
Whose souls, condemn'd and dying,
Were precious in his sight.

3 He shall descend like showers
Upon the fruitful earth,
And love and joy, like flowers,
Spring in his path to birth:
Before him, on the mountains,
Shall peace, the herald, go,
And righteousness, in fountains,
From hill to valley flow.

4 To him shall prayer unceasing.
And daily vows ascend;
His kingdom still increasing,-
A kingdom without end:
The tide of time shall never

His covenant remove;
His name shall stand forever;
That name to us is Love.

WE

[blocks in formation]

E bring no glitt'ring treasures, No gems from earth's deep mine We come, with simple measures, To chant thy love divine. Children, thy favours sharing,

Their voice of thanks would raise; Father, accept our off'ring,

Our song of grateful praise.

2 The dearest gift of Heaven,
Love's written word of truth,
To us is early given,

To guide our steps in youth;
We hear the wondrous story,
The tale of Calvary;
We read of homes in glory,
From sin and sorrow free.

3 Redeemer! grant thy blessing!
O! teach us how to pray,
That each, thy fear possessing,
May tread life's onward way;
Then where the pure are dwelling
We hope to meet again,
And sweeter numbers swelling,
Forever praise thy Name.

WIT

God's service delightful.

ITH joy we hail the sacred day,
Which God has call'd his own;
With joy the summons we obey,
To worship at his throne.

2 Thy chosen temple, Lord, how fair!
As here thy servants throng

To breathe the humble, fervent prayer,
And pour the grateful song.

3 Spirit of grace! O deign to dwell
Within thy Church below;
Make her in holiness excel,
With pure devotion glow.

4 Let peace within her walls be foundLet all her sons unite,

To spread with holy zeal around,
Her clear and shining light.

5 Great God, we hail the sacred day
Which thou hast call'd thine own;
With joy the summons we obey,
To worship at thy throne.

4 Down through the portals of the sky
The' impetuous torrent ran;
And angels flew, with eager joy,
To bear the news to man.

5 With joy the chorus we repeat,—
Glory to God on high!

Good-will and peace are now completeJesus was born to die.

6 Hail, Prince of life, forever hail!

Redeemer, Brother, Friend!

Though earth, and time, and life shall fail, Thy praise shall never end.

7 Hark! the cherubic armies shout,

And glory leads the song:

Good-will and peace are heard throughout The' harmonious heavenly throng.

285 All-sufficiency of the Gospel.

84-a. 3 Rebuild thy walls, thy bounds enlarge, And send thy heralds forth;

THE gospel! O, what endless charms
Dwell in that blissful sound;
Its influence every fear disarms,
And spreads delight around.

2 Here pardon, life, and joy divine,
In rich effusion flow,

For guilty rebels, lost in sin,

And doomed to endless wo. 3 The' almighty Former of the skies Stoops to our vile abode;

While angels view with wond'ring eyes,
And hail the' incarnate God.

4 How rich the depths of love divine!
Of bliss a boundless store!
Redeemer, let me call thee mine,—
Thy fullness I implore.

5 On thee alone my hope relies;
Beneath thy cross I fall;

My Lord, my life, my sacrifice,
My Saviour and my all!

2 If to the right or left we stray,
Leave us not comfortless;
But guide our feet into the way
Of everlasting peace.

3 Help us to help each other, Lord, Each other's cross to bear:

Let each his friendly aid afford,
And feel his brother's care.

4 Help us to build each other up;
Our little stock improve;
Increase our faith, confirm our hope,
And perfect us in love.

5 Up into thee, our living Head,
Let us in all things grow,

Till thou hast made us free indeed,

And spotless here below.

Say to the south,-Give up thy charge!
And,-Keep not back, O`north!

4 They come, they come: thine exiled bands, Where'er they rest or roam,

Have heard thy voice in distant lands,
And hasten to their home.

5 Thus, though the universe shall burn,
And God his works destroy,
With songs thy ransom'd shall return,
And everlasting joy.

THE

[blocks in formation]

HE head that once was crown'd with thorns,
Is crown'd with glory now;

A royal diadem adorns

The mighty Victor's brow.

2 The highest place that heaven affords,
Is to our Jesus given;

The Kings of kings, and Lord of lords,
He reigns o'er earth and heaven-

3 The joy of all who dwell above,
The joy of all below,

To whom he manifests his love,

And grants his Name to know.

4 To them the cross, with all its shame,
With all its grace, is given;
Their name-an everlasting name,
Their joy-the joy of heaven.

5 They suffer with their Lord below,
They reign with him above;

Their everlasting joy to know
The myst'ry of his love.

[blocks in formation]

IN hope, against all human hope,
Self-desp'rate, I believe,-

Thy quick'ning word shall raise me up;
Thou wilt thy Spirit give.

2 The thing surpasses all my thought; But faithful is my Lord;

6 Then, when the mighty work is wrought, Through unbelief I stagger not,

Receive thy ready bride:

Give us in heaven a happy lot With all the sanctified.

[blocks in formation]

For God hath spoke the word.

3 Faith, mighty faith, the promise sees, And looks to that alone;

Laughs at impossibilities,

And cries, It shall be done!

4 To thee the glory of thy power
And faithfulness I give;

I shall in Christ, at that glad hour,
And Christ in me shall live.

5 Obedient faith, that waits on thee,
Thou never wilt reprove;
But thou wilt form thy Son in me,
And perfect me in love.

4 Burst thy shackles; drop thy clay;
Sweetly breathe thyself away;
Singing, to thy crown remove,
Swift of wing, and fired with love.
5 Shudder not to pass the stream:
Venture all thy care on Him—
Him, whose dying love and power
Still'd its tossing, hush'd its roar.

6 Safe is the expanded wave,-
Gentle as a summer's eve;
Not one object of his care
Ever suffer'd shipwreck there.

7 See the haven full in view;
Love divine shall bear thee through:
Trust to that propitious gale;
Weigh thine anchor, spread thy sail.

8 Saints in glory, perfect made,
Wait thy passage through the shade;
Swiftly to their wish be given;
Kindle higher joy in heaven.

Perfect submission.

WHEN, my Saviour, shall I be
Perfectly Designed to thee?

Poor and vile in my own eyes,
Only in thy wisdom wise?

2 Only thee content to know,
Ignorant of all below?
Only guided by thy light?
Only mighty in thy might?

3 So I may thy Spirit know,
Let him as he listeth blow:
Let the manner be unknown,
So I may with thee be one:-
4 Fully in my life express
All the heights of holiness;
Sweetly let my spirit prove,
All the depths of humble love.

168-a.

248 Life and immortality brought to light. 173-a.

DAY of God! thou blessed day,

At thy dawn the grave gave way
To the power of Him within,
Who had, sinless, bled for sin.

2 Thine the radiance to illume
First, for man, the dismal tomb,
When its bars their weakness own'd,
There revealing death dethroned.
3 Then the Sun of Righteousness
Rose, a darken'd world to bless,
Bringing up from mortal night
Immortality and light.

4 Day of glory, day of power,
Sacred be thine every hour,-
Emblem, earnest, of the rest
That remaineth for the blest.

EPHESUS. 5th P. M.

Chil-dren of the heavenly King, As we journey, let us sing:

Sing our Saviour's worth-y praise, Glo-rious in

his

works and ways.

838

The pilgrim's song.
HILDREN of the heavenly King,
As we journey let us sing;
Sing our Saviour's worthy praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.
2 We are trav'ling home to God, ́
In the way our fathers trod;
They are happy now, and we
Soon their happiness shall see.
3 O ye banish'd seed, be glad;
Christ our Advocate is made:
Us to save our flesh assumes,-
Brother to our souls becomes.

4 Fear not, brethren, joyful stand
On the borders of our land;
Jesus Christ, our Father's Son,
Bids us undismay'd go on.

5 Lord! obediently we'll go,
Gladly leaving all below:
Only thou our leader be,

And we still will follow thee.

[blocks in formation]
[blocks in formation]

3 Make us of one heart and mind,-
Courteous, pitiful, and kind;
Lowly, meek, in thought and word,-
Altogether like our Lord.

4 Let us for each other care;
Each the other's burden bear:
To thy Church the pattern give;
Show how true believers live.

5 Free from anger and from pride,
Let us thus in God abide;
All the depths of love express,-
All the heights of holiness.

6 Let us then with joy remove
To the family above;

On the wings of angels fly;
Show how true believers die.
