Claiming the promise.

JESUS, we look to thee,

Thy promised presence claim; Thou in the midst of us shalt be, Assembled in thy name:

2 Thy name salvation is,

Which here we come to prove:

Thy name is life, and health, and peace, And everlasting love.

3 Not in the name of pride

Or selfishness we meet;

From nature's paths we turn aside,
And worldly thoughts forget.
We meet the grace to take,
Which thou hast freely given;
We meet on earth for thy dear sake,
That we may meet in heaven.

5 Present we know thou art,
But O, thyself reveal!

Now, Lord, let every bounding heart
The mighty comfort feel.

O may thy quick'ning voice
The death of sin remove;
And bid our inmost souls rejoice,
In hope of perfect love.

Evening.-Solitude.

LOVE to steal awhile away
From every cumb'ring care,

And spend the hours of setting day
In humble, grateful prayer.

2 I love in solitude to shed

The penitential tear,
And all his promises to plead

Where none but God can hear.
3 I love to think on mercies past,
And future good implore,-
And all my cares and sorrows cast
On Him whom I adore.

4 I love by faith to take a view
Of brighter scenes in heaven;
The prospect doth my strength renew,
While here by tempests driven.

5 Thus, when life's toilsome day is o'er, May its departing ray

Be calm as this impressive hour,
And lead to endless day.

And never-with'ring flowers:
Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heavenly land from ours.

3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood
Stand dress'd in living green;

So to the Jews old Canaan stood,

While Jordan roll'd between.

4 Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er,

Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, Should fright us from the shore.

Till heavenly rapture tune my voice To spread thy praise abroad.
