COMPANION VOLUMES.

The military operations throughout the country, and the volumes of Series I which pertain to them, are naturally divided into four great groups, viz:

First.-Operations in Maryland, Eastern North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia (except Southwestern) and West Virginia-Volumes 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 11, 12, 18, 19, 21, 25, 27, 29, 33, 36, 37, 40, 42, 43, 46, 51.

Second.-Operations in Southwestern Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, West Florida and Northern Georgia-Volumes 1, 4, 6, 7, 10, 15, 16, 17, 20, 23, 24, 26, 30, 31, 32, 38, 39, 45, 49, 52.

Third.—Operations in South Carolina, Southern Georgia, Middle and East Florida and Western North Carolina-Volumes 1, 6, 14, 28, 35, 44; 47, 53.

Fourth.-Operations in Louisiana and the Trans-Mississippi States and Territories, the Pacific Coast and Department of the Northwest-Volumes 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 15, 22, 26, 34, 41, 48, 50, 53.

Volumes 51, 52 and 53 should always be consulted in connection with the several volumes to which they are supplemental.

SPECIAL INDEX

FOR THE

PRINCIPAL ARMIES, ARMY CORPS, MILITARY DIVISIONS AND DEPARTMENTS.

In accordance with the plan of indexing which was adopted at the outset of the publication and has been adhered to throughout the whole work, for the purpose of securing uniformity in the indexes and preventing their becoming unwieldy, the principal reports and correspondence pertaining to brigades, divisions, army corps, armies and geographical military divisions and departments have not been indexed, either in the volumes or in the general index, under the designating titles of the organizations to which they pertain, but are referred to under the names of the commanding officers and others concerned in the correspondence. It is necessary, therefore, in order to find in the index references to the operations of a particular brigade or higher organization, to first ascertain the name of the commanding officer of the organization for the period in question. This being done, the desired references can be readily found under that name in the volume index or through the general index. A list of the reports, for each important battle, campaign or other military operation, that appear in any volume follows the "Summary of Principal Events" in that volume. In addition to this, the volumes contain rosters of troops and commanders for the principal campaigns and battles, and other rosters at dates from two to four months apart will be found throughout the whole work. By referring to these lists and rosters the searcher will be enabled to find the names of commanders of brigades, divisions, army corps and other organizations, under which he must seek in the volume indexes for page references to documents pertaining to those organizations. (See explanatory note preceding each of the volume indexes.)

As an additional aid to the searcher, the following special index has been compiled. This index shows, for each of the principal army corps, armies and geographical military divisions and departments, all the volumes containing reports or correspondence relating especially to those organizations. For page references to these documents,
