THE INVENTORY OF THE GOODS AND CHATTELS OF MR. RICHARD BEVYS, LATE MAYOR OF EXETER, 1603. TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT. BY THE REV. E. A. DONALDSON, M.A., Rector of Pyworthy. WITH NOTES. (Read at Launceston, 28th July, 1909.) THIS Inventory was written in 1603 on ten pieces of parchment, sewn together so as to make a roll 21 ft. 3 in. in length; the pieces mostly vary in width from 8 to 8 in., but the first two are as much as 9 in. wide. With the exception of the postscript, it is all written in one hand; this postscript is in the handwriting of Edmund Woodhall, the Registrary, and records that the inventory was "exhibited" before him on 13 August, 1604. Richard Bevys, or Beavis, was the son of John Beavis, alias Beafice, and of his wife Christian. He was Mayor of Exeter when he died, 25 August, 1603. I do not know the date of his birth. He married twice. Firstly, Elizabeth, daughter of had: Price, by whom he Nicholas B. of Exon., first son, who married a daughter of Walrond, of Devon. Richard B., second son. A daughter or daughters. Secondly, Jane, daughter of Henry Huish, of Sands, in the parish of Sidbury, by whom he had : Peter, third son, born 1590, died 1653; he married Susannah, only daughter of W. Martin, late Recorder of Exon., and had issue. Other issue. The above information comes from a pedigree of the family in the possession of J. T. G. Donaldson, Esq., of Clevedon, Somerset, and is the earliest portion of it. Richard Bevys was a prosperous cloth merchant of Exeter, where he had his house, shop, and warehouse; he also had a small house at Heavitree, where he did a little farming.
