TWENTY-SEVENTH REPORT (THIRD SERIES) OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE CLIMATE OF DEVON. TWENTY-SEVENTH REPORT of the Committee-consisting of Sir Alfred W. Croft, Mr. James Hamlyn, and Mr. R. Hansford Worth (Secretary)--appointed to collect and tabulate trustworthy and comparable Observations on the Climate of Devon.

Edited by R. HANSFORD WORTH, Secretary of the Committee.

(Read at Launceston, 28th July, 1909.)

YOUR Committee regrets the discontinuance of observations at Bossel Park, Buckfastleigh, Mr. James Hamlyn having ceased to reside there.

A new station appears for the first time, Brandis Corner, North Devon. Mr. G. V. Corbet has kindly consented to send his observations taken at Forda, and thus a district is represented which has formerly constituted a gap in the distribution of our Stations.

Mr. Charles Barran has continued at Berry Pomeroy his observations of the fall of rain in the day and night periods respectively. The results have not been so distinctive during the year 1908. The nights, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., yielded 18.03 inches of rain, and the days, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., yielded 15.12, a difference of 2.91 inches only, on a total fall of 33-15 inches. In 1907 the night excess over the day was 9.67 inches on a total fall of 46.85 inches. Mr. Barran writes to the Secretary: "You will notice my theory of heavier rain at night does not show so decisively on a rainfall seven inches below the average.'

The year 1908 was distinctly dry, abnormal months being January, February, June, October, and November, all of which were well below the average. On the other hand, August was, at most Stations, distinctly wet.

At Druid, Ashburton, the rainfall amounted to 81 per cent of the average of forty years, and at Exeter to

74 per cent of a similar average. On the other hand, at both Stations the number of wet days exceeded the average.

Nineteen hundred and eight was somewhat warmer than 1907, but the difference was not marked, and the extreme maximum of the latter year was the higher.

The best thanks of the Committee and of the Association are due to the Observers, whose assistance renders possible the preparation of this Report.

The names of the Observers or the Authorities, and of the Stations, with the heights above Ordnance-datum, are as follows:
