3 The world cannot withstand Its ancient Conqueror ;

The world must sink beneath the Hand

Which arms us for the war:

This is the victory,

Before our faith they fall; Jesus hath died for you and me; Believe, and conquer all.

PRAY

The well-fought day.

Y, without ceasing, pray,
(Your Captain gives the word;)

His summons cheerfully obey,
And call upon the Lord:
To God your every want

In instant prayer display;
Pray always; pray, and never faint;
Pray, without ceasing, pray.

2 In fellowship,—alone,

To God with faith draw near; Approach his courts, besiege his throne With all the power of prayer:

His mercy now implore,

And now show forth his praise;
In shouts, or silent awe, adore
His miracles of grace.

3 From strength to strength go on; Wrestle, and fight, and pray;

Tread all the powers of darkness down, And win the well-fought day:

Still let the Spirit cry,

In all his soldiers,-Come,

Till Christ the Lord descend from high, And take the conqu'rors home.

1st P. M. 6 lines 8s.

Sober vigilance.

HIS slumber from my spirit shake;
Warn'd by the Spirit's inward call,
Let me to righteousness awake,

And pray that I may never fall;
Or give to sin or Satan place,
But walk in all thy righteous ways.

2 0 wouldst thou, Lord, thy servant guard
'Gainst every known or secret foe;
A mind for all assaults prepared,
A sober vigilance bestow;
Ever apprized of danger nigh,
And when to fight and when to fly.
3 0 never suffer me to sleep

Secure within the verge of hell;
But still my watchful spirit keep
In lowly awe and loving zeal;
And bless me with a godly fear,
And plant that guardian angel here.
4 Attended by that sacred dread,
And wise from evil to depart,

Let me from strength to strength proceed,
And rise to purity of heart:

Through all the paths of duty move,

From humble faith to perfect love.

Heavenly zeal.

L. M.

0

KING of glory, thy rich grace Our feeble thought surpasses far; Yea, e'en our crimes, though numberless, Less num'rous than thy mercies are. 2 Still, Lord, thy saving health display. And arm our souls with heavenly zeal; So, fearless, shall we urge our way

Through all the powers of earth and hell.

731

Perseverance.

S. M.

Y soul, be on thy guard;

Ten thousand foes arise;
The hosts of sin are pressing hard
To draw thee from the skies.
20 watch, and fight, and pray;
The battle ne'er give o'er;
Renew it boldly every day,
And help divine implore.
3 Ne'er think the vict'ry won,
Nor lay thine armour down:
The work of faith will not be done,
Till thou obtain the crown.

4 Then persevere till death

Shall bring thee to thy God;

He'll take thee, at thy parting breath, To his divine abode.

732

The mind that was in Christ.

EQUIP me for the war,

S. M.

And teach my hands to fight; My simple, upright heart prepare, And guide my words aright. 2 Control my every thought; My whole of sin remove: Let all my works in thee be wrought; Let all be wrought in love.

3 0 arm me with the mind,

Meek Lamb, that was in thee; And let my knowing zeal be join'd With perfect charity.

4 With calm and temper'd zeal
Let me enforce thy call 1;

And vindicate thy gracious will,
Which offers life to all.

5 0 may I love like thee,—
In all thy footsteps tread;
Thou hatest all iniquity,

But nothing thou hast made.
60 may I learn the art,

With meekness to reprove;
To hate the sin with all my heart,
But still the sinner love.

1st P. M. 6 lines 8:

The victory that overcometh the world. QURROUNDED by a host of foes, Storm'd by a host of foes within, Nor swift to flee, nor strong to' oppose, Single against hell, earth, and sin: Single, yet undismay'd, I am;

I dare believe in Jesus' name.

2 What though a thousand hosts engage A thousand worlds, my soul to shake; I have a shield shall quell their rage,

And drive the alien armies back : Portray'd, it bears a bleeding Lamb; I dare believe in Jesus' name.

734

Faith sees the final triumph.

M I a soldier of the cross,

AM

A foll'wer of the Lamb,

C. M.

And shall I fear to own his cause,
Or blush to speak his name?
2 Must I be carried to the skies
On flowery beds of ease;
While others fought to win the prize,
And sail'd through bloody seas?

3 Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?

Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

4 Since I must fight if I would reign,
Increase my courage, Lord;
I'll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by thy word.

5 Thy saints in all this glorious war
Shall conquer, though they die :
They see the triumph from afar,-
By faith they bring it nigh.

6 When that illustrious day shall rise. And all thy armies shine

In robes of vict'ry through the skies,
The glory shall be thine.

735

0

The violent take it by force.
MAY thy powerful word
Inspire a feeble worm

To rush into thy kingdom, Lord,
And take it as by storm.
20 may we all improve

The grace already given,

S. M.

To seize the crown of perfect love,
And scale the mount of heaven.

736

WH

Heavenly rest in anticipation.

C. M.

WHEN I can read my title clear
To mansions in the skies,

I'll bid farewell to every fear,

And wipe my weeping eyes.

2 Should earth against my soul engage,
And fiery darts be hurl'd,
Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowning world.

3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,
Let storms of sorrow fall,-

So I but safely reach my home,

My God, my heaven, my all.
