1st P. M. 6 lines 8s.

The ante-past of heaven.

WHERE shall

HERE shall my wand'ring soul begin? all to heaven aspire? A slave redeem'd from death and sin,A brand pluck'd from eternal fire,How shall I equal triumphs raise, Or sing my great Deliv'rer's praise? 2 O how shall I the goodness tell, Father, which thou to me hast show'd? That I, a child of wrath and hell,

I should be call'd a child of God,
Should know, should feel my sins forgiven,
Blest with this ante-past of heaven.
3 And shall I slight my Father's love,

Or basely fear his gifts to own?
Unmindful of his favours prove?
Shall I, the hallow'd cross to shun,
Refuse his righteousness to impart,
By hiding it within my heart?
4 No: though the ancient dragon rage,
And call forth all his hosts to war;
Though earth's self-righteous sons engage,
Them and their god alike I dare;
Jesus, the sinner's Friend, proclaim;
Jesus, to sinners still the same.

The revealing and witnessing Spirit.
of faith, come down,

PIRIT

Reveal the things of God;

And make to us the Godhead known,
And witness with the blood:

'Tis thine the blood to apply,

And give us eyes to see,
That He who did for sinners die,
Hath surely died for me.

2 No man can truly say

That Jesus is the Lord,
Unless thou take the veil away,
And breathe the living word:
Then, only then we feel

Our int'rest in his blood;
And cry, with joy unspeakable, -
Thou art my Lord, my God!

3 O that the world might know
The all-atoning Lamb!
Spirit of faith, descend and show
The virtue of his Name:
The grace which all may find,
The saving power impart;
And testify to all mankind,
And speak in every heart.

The comforts, gifts, and graces of the Spirit.

YOD of all consolation,

G

☑ The Holy Ghost thou art;

Thy secret inspiration

Hath told it to my heart:

The blessing I inherit,

Through Jesus' prayer bestow'd,

The Comforter, the Spirit,
The true eternal God.

2 With God the Son and Saviour, With God the Father one,

The tokens of his favour

Are now to man made known;

An ante-past of heaven

Thou dost in me reveal,

Attest my sins forgiven,
And my salvation seal.

3 The' indubitable witness

Of thy own Deity,
Thou giv'st my soul its fitness
Thy glorious face to see:
Thy comforts, gifts, and graces,
My largest thoughts transcend,

And challenge endless praises,

When faith in sight shall end.

The signature of divine love.

HEN shall

WH I hear the inward voice,

Which only faithful souls can hear?

Pardon, and peace, and heavenly joys,
Attend the promised Comforter:
O come, and righteousness divine,
And Christ, and all with Christ, are mine,

2 O that the Comforter would come,
Nor visit as a transient guest;
But fix in me his constant home,
And keep possession of my breast;
And make my soul his loved abode,
The temple of indwelling God.

3 Come, Holy Ghost, my heart inspire;
Attest that I am born again;
Come, and baptize me now with fire,
Nor let thy former gifts be vain :
I cannot rest in sins forgiven;
Where is the earnest of my heaven?

4 Where the indubitable seal,

That ascertains the kingdom mine?
The powerful stamp I long to feel,-
The signature of love divine;
O shed it in my heart abroad,
Fulness of love, of heaven, of God!

:

[blocks in formation]

For this to Jesus I look up;

I calmly wait for this.

2 I wait till he shall touch me clean,-Shall life and power impart;

Give me the faith that casts out sin,
And purifies the heart.

3 This is the dear redeeming grace,
For every sinner free;
Surely it shall on me take place,
The chief of sinners,-me.

1 From all iniquity, from all,
He shall my soul redeem;
In Jesus I believe, and shall
Believe myself to him.

5 When Jesus makes my heart his home,
My sin shall all depart ;-
And, lo! he saith, I quickly come,

To fill and rule thy heart.

6 Be it according to thy word ; Redeem me from all sin;

My heart would now receive thee, Lord; Come in, my Lord, come in!

The will of God.

I should holy be:

E wills that

That holiness I long to feel;

That full divine conformity

To all my Saviour's righteous will.

2 See, Lord, the travail of thy soul Accomplish'd in the change of mine; And plunge me, every whit made whole, In all the depths of love divine. 3 On thee, O God, my soul is stay'd, And waits to prove thine utmost will, The promise by thy mercy made, Thou canst, thou wilt, in me fulfil. 4 No more I stagger at thy power, Or doubt thy truth, which cannot move: Hasten the long-expected hour,

And bless me with thy perfect love.

482

T

Thy will be done.

HIS is thy will, I know,
That I should holy be;
Should let my sins this moment go,
This moment turn to thee.

2 O might I now embrace
Thine all-sufficient power,
And never more to sin give place,
And never grieve thee more.

483

I

The good pleasure of his will.

KNOW that my Redeemer lives,
And ever prays for me:
A token of his love he gives, —
A pledge of liberty.

2 I find him lifting up my head;
He brings salvation near;
His presence makes me free indeed,
And he will soon appear.
3 He wills that I should holy be!
What can withstand his will?

The counsel of his grace in me
He surely shall fulfil.
