THE GOSPEL.

284

10th P. M. 8 lines 8s.

A

The Fountain of living waters. FOUNTAIN of life and of grace In Christ, our Redeemer, we see: For us, who his offers embrace, For all, it is open and free: Jehovah, himself, doth invite

To drink of his pleasures unknown: The streams of immortal delight, That flow from his heavenly throne. 2 As soon as in him we believe, By faith of his Spirit we take: And, freely forgiven, receive The mercy for Jesus's sake! We gain a pure drop of his love; The life of eternity know; Angelical happiness prove, And witness a heaven below.

All-sufficiency of the gospel.

C. M.

THE gospel! O, what endless charms Dwell in that blissful sound

THE

Its influence every fear disarms,
And spreads delight around.

2 Here pardon, life, and joy divine,
In rich effusion flow,

For guilty rebels, lost in sin,

And doom'd to endless wo.

3 The' almighty Former of the skies Stoops to our vile abode;

While angels view with wond'ring eyes, And hail the' incarnate God,

4 How rich the depths of love divine!
Of bliss a boundless store!
Redeemer, let me call thee mine,-
Thy fulness I implore.

5 On thee alone my hope relies;
Beneath thy cross I fall;

My Lord, my life, my sacrifice,
My Saviour, and my all!

Our debt paid upon the cross.
HAT majesty and grace
Through all the gospel shine!
'Tis God that speaks, and we confess
The doctrine most divine.

2 Down from his throne on high,
The mighty Saviour comes;
Lays his bright robes of glory by,
And feeble flesh assumes.
3 The debt that sinners owed,
Upon the cross he pays:

Then through the clouds ascends to God, 'Midst shouts of loftiest praise.

4 There our High Priest appears,
Before his Father's throne;
Mingles his merits with our tears,
And pours salvation down.
5 Great Sov'reign, we adore
Thy justice and thy grace,
And on thy faithfulness and power
Our firm dependence place.

HOW

The divine Teacher.

L. M.

OW sweetly flow'd the gospel's sound From lips of gentleness and grace, While list'ning thousands gather'd round, And joy and rev'rence fill'd the place.

2 Now is the' accepted time,
The Saviour calls to-day;
To-morrow it may be too late-
Then why should you delay?
3 Now is the' accepted time,
The gospel bids you come;
And every promise in his word
Declares there yet is room.

[merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

O sinner, come, without delay,
And bow before the throne.
2 O hear God's voice to-day,
And harden not your heart;
To-morrow, with a frown, he may
Pronounce the word,-Depart!

Boast not thyself of to-morrow.

S. M.

C. M.

WHY should we boast of time to come,
Though but a single day?

This hour may fix our final doom,

Though strong, and young, and gay.

2 The present we should now redeem;

This only is our own;

The past, alas! is all a dream;

The future is unknown.

3 0, think what vast concerns depend
Upon a moment's space,

When life and all its cares shall end
In vengeance or in grace!

4 0 for that power which melts the heart, And lifts the soul on high,

Where sin, and grief, and death depart,
And pleasures never die.

5 There we with ecstasy shall fall
Before Immanuel's feet;
And hail him as our All in all,
In happiness complete.

5th P. M. 4 lines 78.

The danger of delay.

ASTEN, sinner, to be wise!
Stay not for the morrow's sun :
Wisdom if you still despise,
Harder is it to be won.
2 Hasten, mercy to implore!
Stay not for the morrow's sun,
Lest thy season should be o'er
Ere this evening's stage be run,
3 Hasten, sinner, to return!

Stay not for the morrow's sun,
Lest thy lamp should fail to burn
Ere salvation's work is done.
4 Hasten, sinner, to be blest!
Stay not for the morrow's sun,
Lest perdition thee arrest

Ere the morrow is begun.

334

No peace to the wicked.

VINNERS, the voice of God regard;

'Tis mercy speaks to-day;

He calls you by his sacred word
From sin's destructive way.

C. M

2 Like the rough sea that cannot rest
You live, devoid of peace;

A thousand stings within your breast
Deprive your souls of ease.

3 Your way is dark, and leads to hell: Why will you persevere ?

Can you in endless torments dwell,
Shut up in black despair?

4 Why will you in the crooked ways

Of sin and folly go?

In pain you travel all your days,
To reach eternal wo.

5 But he that turns to God shall live, Through his abounding grace:

His mercy will the guilt forgive
Of those that seek his face.

6 Bow to the sceptre of his word,
Renouncing every sin;

Submit to him, your sov'reign Lord,
And learn his will divine.

The horrors of the second death.

WHERE shall rest be found,-
Rest for the weary soul?

S. M.

"Twere vain the ocean's depths to sound, Or pierce to either pole.

2 The world can never give
The bliss for which we sigh;
'Tis not the whole of life to live,
Nor all of death to die.

3 Beyond this vale of tears
There is a life above,
Unmeasured by the flight of years;
And all that life is love.

4 There is a death, whose pang
Outlasts the fleeting breath:
O what eternal horrors hang
Around the second death!

5 Thou God of truth and grace!
Teach us that death to shun;
Lest we be banish'd from thy face,
Forever more undone.
