3 Subdue the power of every sin, Whate'er that sin may be; That we, in singleness of heart, May worship only thee.
4 Then with our spirits witness bear, That we are sons of God;
Redeem'd from sin, and death, and hell, Through Christ's atoning blood.
REAT Spirit, by whose mighty power All creatures live and move, On us thy benediction shower; Inspire our souls with love.
2 Hail, Source of light! arise and shine; All gloom and doubt dispel;
Give peace and joy, for we are thine; In us forever dwell.
3 From death to life our spirits raise, And full redemption bring;
New tongues impart to speak the praise Of Christ, our God and King.
4 Thine inward witness bear, unknown To all the world beside;
With joy we then shall feel and own Our Saviour glorified.
The blessings of His grace.
OLEST Comforter divine,
Bwhose rays of heavenly love BLEST
Amid our gloom and darkness shine, And point our souls above;— 2 Thou, who with still small voice Dost stop the sinner's way, And bid the mourning saint rejoice, Though earthly joys decay ;-
3 Thou, whose inspiring breath Can make the cloud of care, And e'en the gloomy vale of deat?., A smile of glory wear;- 4 Thou, who dost fill the heart With love to all our race,- Blest Comforter! to us impart Thine all-sufficient grace.
Earnest of eternal rest.
YRACIOUS Spirit-Love divine!
Let thy light within me shine; All my guilty fears remove; Fill me with thy heavenly love. 2 Speak thy pard'ning grace to me Set the burden'd sinner free; Lead me to the Lamb of God; Wash me in his precious blood. 3 Life and peace to me impart; Seal salvation on my heart; Breathe thyself into my breast,- Earnest of immortal rest.
4 Let me never from thee stray; Keep me in the narrow way; Fill my soul with joy divine; Keep me, Lord, forever thine.
Imploring His guidance.
OME, Spirit, Source of light; Thy grace is unconfined;
Dispel the gloomy shades of night,— The darkness of the mind.
2 Now to our eyes display
The truth thy words reveal; Cause us to run the heavenly way, Delighting in thy will.
3 Thy teachings make us know The myst'ries of thy love, The vanity of things below, The joy of things above.
4 While through this maze we stray, O spread thy beams abroad; Point out the dangers of the way, And guide our steps to God.
11th P. M. 76, 76, 77, 76
Seeking His power and grace. ATHER of our dying Lord, Remember us for good;
O fulfil his faithful word,
And hear his speaking blood. Give us that for which he prays:
Father, glorify thy Son;
Show his truth, and power, and grace And send the promise down.
2 True and faithful Witness, thou, O Christ, the Spirit give; Hast thou not received him now, That we might now receive? Art thou not the living Head? Life to all thy limbs impart; Shed thy love, thy Spirit shed, In every waiting heart.
3 Holy Ghost, the Comforter, The gift of Jesus, come; Glow our hearts to find thee near And swell to make thee room;
Present with us thee we feel; Come, O come, and in us be; With us, in us, live and dwell, To all eternity.
EXPAND thy wings, celestial Dove,
And, brooding o'er our nature's night, Call forth the ray of heavenly love, And let there in our souls be light; Illuminate the dark abyss
With glorious beams of endless bliss. 2 Let there be light, again command, And light there in our hearts shall be; We then, through faith, shall understand Thy great mysterious majesty; And, by the shining of thy grace, Behold in Christ thy glorious face.
YOME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all thy quick'ning powers:
Kindle a flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours.
2 Look how we grovel here below, Fond of these earthly toys; Our souls, how heavily they go, To reach eternal joys.
3 In vain we tune our formal songs,- In vain we strive to rise; Hosannas languish on our tongues, And our devotion dies.
4 Father, and shall we ever live At this poor dying rate; Our love so faint, so cold to thee, And thine to us so great?
5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all thy quick'ning powers; Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love, And that shall kindle ours.
ATHER, glorify thy Son; Answer his all-powerful prayer;
Send that Intercessor down;
Send that other Comforter, Whom, believingly, we claim,- Whom we ask in Jesus' name. 2 Wilt thou not the promise seal, Good and faithful as thou art,-- Send the Comforter to dwell
Every moment in our heart? Yes, thou must the grace bestow: Truth hath said it shall be so.
NTHRONED on high, Almighty Lord, The Holy Ghost send down;
Fulfil in us thy faithful word,
And all thy mercies crown.
2 Though on our heads no tongues of fire Their wondrous powers impart, Grant, Saviour, what we more desire,-- Thy Spirit in our heart.
3 Spirit of life, and light, and love, Thy heavenly influence give; Quicken our souls, our guilt remove, That we in Christ may live.
4 To our benighted minds reveal The glories of his grace,
And bring us where no clouds conceal The brightness of his face.
5 His love within us shed abroad,-- Life's ever-springing well;
Till God in us, and we in God,. In love eternal dwell.
