1872

Who were the Etruscans ? Lord Crawford is one of the latest writers on the subject, and maintains in the above work, with a singular abundance of learning and argument, a somewhat similar theory to that of the late Dr. Donaldson. His treatment of the subject is however much more exhaustive than that of the former writer, and he attributes a distinctly Germanic character to the Etruscan language, for which Dr. Donaldson claimed a purely Scandinavian kinship. There are some philological arguments based upon the Inscriptions (especially those few which are bilingual) which will stagger many adherents to other theories, and carry conviction to minds already inclined to accept the Teutonic solution of this ancient riddle. Amongst the more remarkable instances of happy interpretation is the explanation of the names Mezentius and Turnus. The least that can be said of this volume is that it is a highly valuable contribution to the study of Old Italic Philology.
