17641 MASHAL HA-KADMUNI, by Isaac ben Salomon ben Sahola, edited by Meir ben Jacob Franzoni: a work consisting of proverbial phrases in rhyme, illustrated by prose fables, all in Hebrew, sm. 4to. numerous woodcuts of talking animals and other facetious designs, somewhat in the style of Esop and the Septem Sapientes, bound in hogskin, stamped with portraits and arabesques in compartments, and the arms of Saxony, VERY RARE, from the Sunderland library, £5. 5s Venice, about 1560

Written in the 13th century, and probably derived from the Kalila wa Dimna. It is bound along with three other rare Hebrew pieces: Shevil Amunah, Trent, 1559; Shaar ha-Shamayim (the Caballistic Porta Coelorum), Vinet. 1547; Evronoth, a Hebrew Calendar, Trent, 1561. They must have all have been carried northward by some German traveller in or soon after 1561, and bound for him perhaps at Wittenberg about 1565-70.

17642 MISCHNA sive totius Hebræorum Juris, Rituum, Antiquitatum, ac Legum Oralium Systema, cum clarissimorum Rabbinorum Maimonidis et Bartenoræ commentariis integris, hebraice et latine, ed. G. SURENHUSIUS, 6 vols. in 3, stout folio, plates, old calf, £5. 15s; or in 6 vols. hf. bd. uncut, £8. Amst. 1698-9

The Mishna is the oldest and most important body of the Hebrew traditions. The Talmud (of Babylon or of Jerusalem) is composed of the Mishna, with the supplementary Gemara (Jerusalem or Babylonian, as the case may be), a later collection of traditions.

The value of this work cannot be too highly estimated. The text is given in Hebrew and Latin, the commentaries of Bartenora and Maimonides as well as the notes of Guisius, Surenhusius, and others, being in Latin only. 17643 EIGHTEEN TREATISES from the Mishna, translated by De Sola and Raphall, 8vo. cloth, 18s 1843

For an English reader who wishes to know something of the contents of a famous book, these translations are extremely useful. see TALMUD, post, No. 17663.

Philo and Paul were two Hellenized Jews of great ability and learning. The one joined the intellectual company of the Neo-platonists, the other flung himself into the new sect along with peasants and fishermen. The latter has become a saint, whose words are quoted throughout the world; the philosopher is only read by scholars and students. Philo sought to prove that the Pentateuch contained the essence of Greek philosophy, as well as the truth of Jewish history,

Ferrare, en casa de Abraham aben Usque, 5313 (1553) An extremely curious book, which can only have been secretly printed, as it dwells on the cruelties exercised in Italy, Germany, England, Spain, Portugal, and elsewhere, by Christians against the Jews; and points out the retributions which were already coming about:-"Italy is to-day bedewed with the blood of her children; as for Spain, we may say that Italy is her grave; for France, Spain is the instrument of her punishment; for Germany, her outlying provinces and the Turk have become her executioners; for England, continuous pestilence and warlike Scotland are her chastisers."

He proves the former universality of snake-worship, and identifies that divinity with the very individual Serpent who discoursed with Eve in Eden. The name of Abury is derived from two Hebrew words meaning the Python of the Sun,--from which we may infer that the Druids were familiar with the tongue of Moses.

One of the most extraordinary works ever written. His theory that the population of the world split into three sections at the destruction of Babel, each carrying with them over the globe the traditions of the true religion, afterwards warped and transformed by time-does not invalidate the industry and learning which enabled him to gather innumerable facts of real importance. Buddhism was merely the corruption of the religion held by the Hebrew patriarchs after the Deluge, and the Brahman mythology of India was derived from Buddhism. This was one of Mr. Faber's less valuable facts.

1836

Ninety-one pages of Index, in treble columns, with 79 lines to a column, constitute the great value of the Anacalypsis. Of the author's portentous knowledge, his powerful critical faculty, his fitness to investigate and eluci date the ancient mysteries of mythology, philology, ethnology, and other ologies, many persons speak with reverence and rapture. But even men of education must admit that Higgins collected a large number of curious and important facts.
