Thefe

Thefe prophecies, befides a number of others, clearly prove, that in this prefent captivity, we are to be cleanfed from ALL our iniquities, &c. And what is of still greater confequence, we are affured, that we shall never return to them any more, because the heart of stone will be taken from us, and a new heart and a new fpririt given unto us, that we may continue to walk in God's ftatutes and judgments FOR EVER.

Before I conclude this letter, I must take notice of what you say, page 46. By Mr. Levi's ❝ own confeffion, there was a Meffiah cut off "about that time, and who could this be but "Jefus?" But, dear Sir, you must surely have paid no attention either to Scripture, or profane history, when you wrote this. For from the fifteenth of Tiberias Cæfar, to the destruction of the temple by Titus, was upwards of forty years. Now, if the anointed was to be cut off after the fixty-nine weeks, and in the one half of the seventieth week, the facrifice, and the oblation was to be made to cease, and in the other, the defolation was to take place, as is manifest from the words of the prophecy, it is clear, according to history, that Jefus could not be the perfon; because, as I have observed, that from the time of his fuffering, to the deftruction of the temple, which was to be accomplished in the feventieth week, was forty years.

LETTER I.

REV. SIR,

Received your volume, intitled, "The One "Great Argument for the Truth of Christi"anity," &c. from Mr. Johnson, my publisher; for which, I thus publickly return you my most fincere thanks. And this, I think myself under the greater obligation to do, because, as I understand, your fole motive was the hope that it would lead me to embrace what you think to be the truth. This being the cafe, you may be affured, I read it with the greatest attention. But, judge of my surprise, when I found, that, a prophecy, which you call "One Great Argument for "the Truth of Christianity," and which as you observe, page 7, "When it is rightly explained, "fuch is its clearness,-fuch its force,-and fuch "its perfpicuity and precifion,-that the whole dispute between Jews and Christians, might be brought to an iffue, upon this very point,―nay, "even the whole argument for Christianity, "might be refted upon the wonderful completion
