BIBLES, TESTAMENTS, PSALTERS, &c.-continued. 307 Byble (The) in Englyshe. Tyndale's Version, revised by M. Coverdale. THE GREAT OR CROMWELL'S BIBLE, usually but erroneously termed the first edition of Cranmer, who had nothing to do with either the translation or publication, having been put forth entirely by Thomas Lord Cromwell (L. W. 6), woodcuts (including Holbein's large engraving round title) black letter, the printed portion of title (the beautiful woodcut border by Holbein from the New Testament of April, 1540, supplying the engraved portion, it being from the identical blocks) and first leaf of Kalendar in facsimile, a few words in *6, and a few letters in Ev in manuscript, else fine copy in russia, g. e. folio. R. Grafton & E. Whitchurch, Apryll, 1539 This impression was commenced secretly in Paris, and when nearly finished, the printers, disturbed by the Inquisition, contrived to save a considerable number of copies and to bring them to London with their types. The work having been completed was issued to the public. The great rarity of this edition is probably owing to the Royal Proclamation ordering the Bible "of the largest and greatest volume' to be placed in every Parish Church, where by constant thumbing most of the copies must have been destroyed. Lea Wilson's copy (in Mr. Gardner's sale) produced £121. , 308 Byble (The), in Englyshe. Cranmer's Version (L. W. 13) black letter, title mended, 3 letters on folio A in facsimile, Li mended at corner, 5 letters on folio L L l vi in facsimile, and last leaf of Table beautifully facsimiled by Harris, else a fine large copy, with autograph of Wm Herbert, having the black letter Admonicion of the Bysshop of London (inlaid) as well as 2 leaves on vellum (Ordo ad faciendum Sponsalia, and large cut of the Crucifixion), from a Salisbury Missal prefixed, splendidly bound in morocco, super extra, covered with blind tooling in the old style, g. e. by Riviere, EXTREMELY RARE folio. T. Petyt and R. Redman for T. Berthelet, Apryll, 1540 This is a reprint or second edition of that of April 1539, erroneously called the first of Cranmer, although, in fact, the Archbishop had nothing to do with either the translation or publication, the first with which he had anything to do being that of April 1540, the text of which materially differs from this issue, which was put forth entirely by Thomas Lord Cromwell, who employed Coverdale to revise the existing translations. Its correct designation ought to be "Cromwell's Coverdale." This edition will be easily recognized by looking at folio CXLVII (Esdras VI), where the bottom line of CXLVI, by a printer's blunder, is repeated. BIBLES, TESTAMENTS, PSALTERS, &c.-continued. 309 BYBLE (THE) in Englyshe, with aprologe therinto, made by the reverende father in God, Thomas [Cranmer], archbyshop of Cantorbury (L. W. 7), woodcuts black letter, wants Exhortacyon, the Summe and Contents, first Prologue and Descripcion (3 leaves), and title, a few words in first leaf of Prologue, a few words in Qiii, a few words in OO viii, a few letters in N n iii and iv, and last two leaves (Table) in beautiful facsimile, else fine copy, in blue morocco extra, g. e. fol. R. Grafton, Apryl, 1540 First edition of the Bible published under the revision of Archbishop Cranmer, and very scarce. As there are five editions, all extremely alike, it is exceedingly difficult to distinguish them one from the other, and the consequence is that to find one perfectly genuine in every leaf is almost impossible. This copy as to text is perfect, but the first part has certainly been taken from the July edition. The other distinctions which mark the April from the subsequent editions in this copy are correct, but as there may have been other leaves supplied from the July edition this lot must be sold not subject to collation. 310 Byble (The), in Englyshe, with a Prologe thereinto made by the reverende father in God Thomas [Cranmer] Arch bysshop of Canterbury (L. W. 7), woodcuts FIRST EDITION OF CRANMER'S BIBLE (Tyndale's Version, folio. E. Whytchurche, Apryll, 1540 No other imperfection is known, but as a portion is supplied from the July edition, it will be sold as it is, and not subject to collation. The large ornamental letters in Esdras, Esther, Job, &c. are peculiar to this edition, as mentioned by Lea Wilson, who, however, takes no notice of his copy of the Epistle to the Romans, commencing with a capital P, ornamented in the same style. This is, however, the case with both Mr. Offor's copies. BIBLES, TESTAMENTS, PSALTERS, &c.-continued. 311 Byble (The) in Englyshe, Cranmer's Version (L.
