Perhaps in this neglected fpot is laid

Some heart once pregnant with celestial fire Hands, that the rod of empire might have sway'd,

Or wak'd to extafy the living lyre.

But Knowledge to their eyes her ample page

Rich with the spoils of time did ne'er unroll; Chill Penury reprefs'd their noble rage,

And froze the genial current of the foul. 14. Full many a gem of pureft ray ferene,

The dark unfathom'd caves of Ocean bear: Full many a flow'r is born to blush unseen,

And wafte its fweetnefs on the defert air.

Some village-Hampden, that with dauntless breast
The little Tyrant of his fields withstood;
Some mute inglorious Milton here may rest,

Some Cromwell guiltlefs of his country's blood.

Eloquio attenti moderarier ora fenatûs,
Exitium fævique minas ridere doloris,
Per patriam largos fortunæ divitis imbres
Spargere, et in læto populi fe agnofcere vultu,

Hos fua fors vetuit; tenuique in limite claufit Virtutes, fcelerifque fimul compefcuit ortum ; Ad folium curfus per cædem urgere cruentos, Atque tuas vetuit, Clementia, claudere portas,

Conatus premere occultos, quos confcia Veri Mens fovet, ingenuique extinguere figna pudoris, Luxuriæque focos cumulare, Ademque fuperbam Thure, quod in facris Mufarum adoleverat aris.

Th' applause of lift'ning fenates to command,

The threats of pain and ruin to despise,

To scatter plenty o'er a fmiling land,

And read their hist'ry in a nation's eyes,

Their lot forbad: nor circumfcrib'd alone

Their growing virtues, but their crimes confin'd Forbad to wade through flaughter to a throne, And shut the gates of Mercy on mankind;

The ftruggling pangs of conscious Truth to hide, To quench the blushes of ingenuous fhame,

Or heap the fhrine of Luxury and Pride

With incenfe kindled at the Mufe's flame.

Infanæ procul amotis certamine turbæ Sobria non illis dedicerunt vota vagari ; Securum vitæ per iter, vallemque reductam, Servabant placidum, curfu fallente, tenorem.

His tamen incautus tumulis ne forte viator Infultet, videas circum monimenta caduca, Quà numeris incompofitis, rudibufque figuris Offa tegit lapis, et fufpiria pofcit euntem.

Pro maftis elegis, culto pro carmine, fcribit Quicquid mufa poteft incondita, et nomen et annos Multaque queis animum moriens folatur agreftis, Dogmata difpergit facraï Scripturaï.

Far from the madding crowd's ignoble ftrife,
Their fober wishes never learn'd to ftray;
Along the cool fequefter'd vale of life

They kept the noifelefs tenor of their way.

Yet ev❜n these bones from infult to protect

Some frail memorial ftill erected nigh,

With uncouth rhimes and fhapelefs fculpture deck'd,

Implores the paffing tribute of a figh.

Their name, their years, spelt by th' unletter'd muse,
The place of fame and elegy supply:

And many a holy Text around fhe ftrews,
That teach the ruftic moralift to die.
