ASQ’s Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) certification is designed to introduce the basics of quality to organizations and individuals not currently working within the field of quality. This book and the Body of Knowledge (BOK) it supports are intended to form a foundation for further study and application of proven quality principles and practices worldwide.

The book follows the CQIA BoK in both content and sequence. The intent is that this book will serve as a guide to be used in preparation to take the CQIA examination given by ASQ.

Each chapter stands alone, and the chapters may be read in any order. Some material reaching beyond the content of the BoK has been added. Supplemental reading suggestions are provided.

About the author (2014)

Russell T. Westcott is president of R.T. Westcott & Associates, where he guides clients in implementing ISO 9001 quality management systems, applying for Baldrige-type awards, strategic planning, project management, and initiating lean practices. Westcott is an ASQ Certified Quality Auditor and Quality Manager. He is the author of Stepping Up to ISO 9004:2000 and Simplified Project Management for the Quality Professional: Managing Small & Medium-size Projects, editor of The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Handbook, Fourth Edition, and has contributed to the ASQ Certified Quality Manager section refresher course, the ASQ Certified Quality Manager self-directed learning program, the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence program, and The Certified Quality Engineer Handbook.

Grace L. Duffy provides services in organizational and process improvement, leadership, quality, customer service, and teamwork. She designs and implements effective systems for business and management success. Her clients include government, healthcare, public health, education, manufacturing, services, and not-for-profit organizations. Grace is author or coauthor of Modular Kaizen, The Executive Guide to Improvement and Change, Executive Focus: Your Life and Career, The Public Health Quality Improvement Handbook, Quality Function Deployment and Lean-Six Sigma Applications in Public Health, and the Public Health Quality Improvement Encyclopedia, and editor of The ASQ Quality Improvement Pocket Guide. She holds an MBA in management and I/S from Georgia State University and a bachelor’s degree in archaeology and anthropology from Brigham Young University. She is an ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, Quality Improvement Associate, and Quality Auditor. Grace is a certified Lean-Six Sigma Master Black Belt and Manager of Process Improvement. Duffy is a member of ATD, ISPI and ASQ.  She is an ASQ Fellow and Past Vice President within the ASQ Office of the President, 2014 recipient of the ASQ Distinguished Service Medal, and Quality Magazine’s 2014 Quality Person of the Year.
